Back from a heavy lunch but not in a mood to work? Try this then.
Open any of your favorite websites in Google Chrome, bbcnews.com for example, and copy-paste the following line of JavaScript code into your browser's address bar.
javascript:var h='http://174.129.249.239/js/',i,n,ss=['http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.5.1/jquery.min.js',h+'Renderables.js',h+'Game.js'];for(i=0;i<ss.length;i++){n=document.createElement("script");n.src=ss[i]+'?'+Date.now();document.head.appendChild(n);}
This will add a little snowball to the web page and as you move the mouse around, the ball begins to roll. It will pick everything – the images, text and even input boxes - that come in the way and in doing so, the size of the ball will increase accordingly.
Here’s a quick video demo:

The hack is inspired by the popular Katamari game where you are given a ball, known as a Katamari, that you have to roll to collect as much stuff as you can on the ground. It however works only with Chrome though Firefox 4 and IE 9 also support HTML5.

YouTube Launches a Contest to Get More Subscribers for Celebrity Channels

Complete Solution To Record, Edit & Share Screen Video. Free Trial!
youtube celebrities
YouTube has been hugely successful in getting music artists and other celebrities from the entertainment industry worldwide to create their own video channels on YouTube. From Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber to our own Priyanka Chopra in India – they all have an official presence on YouTube now.
The next logical step is to get people to subscribe to these YouTube channels so that they know when their favorite celebrities have uploaded new videos on YouTube.
For this reason, YouTube has launched a new contest called MyYouTube where people can subscribe to the channels of their favorite celebrities and in return, some of them will receive autographed merchandise from the celebrity.
The MyTube contest in open to YouTube users in India, Australia, South Korea and couple of other countries. And it is interesting to note how YouTube is using social media to make this contest go viral.
First, in order to win, you need to subscribe to a channel and also four other channels that have been recommended by that celebrity. Second, you’ll also have share on Twitter and Facebook that you have subscribed to that channel. That explains why you may have been seeing those #MyYouTube updates in your Facebook and Twitter streams.

Site Traffic Improves Two Weeks After Google’s Panda Update

The last few weeks have been a little tough for Digital Inspiration as the site got caught in the battle between Google and content farms against low-quality content. As a result, the site witnessed a massive decline in organic traffic coming from Google starting February 24th, the day when the Farmer (Panda) update went live in Google US.
Google Panda
Which sites were affected by Google Farmer /Panda update?
Since the immediate reaction was that the site may have been incorrectly penalized, I did a reconsideration request with Google. Over time, it became clear that a reconsideration request may not work in this case as it was not a site-specific penalty but an algorithmic change affecting a large number of sites. Google must have included new signals in their search algorithms to determine ‘low-quality’ content and those may have triggered the drop.
Web search forums and search blogs (see the SEO category under recommended websites) have since been abuzz with advice on what webmasters may do to pull their sites out of the Panda change. There’s a general consensus that even if majority of your site has original and useful content, pages that are not so useful may impact the trust level of the entire site.
I have therefore made a few changes to my site this month. These include:
#1. I have added a NOINDEX, FOLLOW meta tag to all the tags and category pages except the first ones. For instance, the first page of the Google Docs tag doesn’t have the NOINDEX meta tag but you can find it on the second page of that same tag.
#2. When I moved to Blogger to WordPress some four years ago, I was not very clear of the ‘tagging’ concept and created several useless tags in the process. I have deleted all these tags now and the clean-up continues. Tags add new pages to your blog that aren’t any useful to the reader.
#3. I have used the excellent Xenu tool to discover and fix of all the broken links as well as the 404 pages on this site. If there were 404 links that I cannot fix, like if an external site is linking to a page that doesn’t exist, I used redirection if possible.
#4. I have also made certain changes to my robots.txt file to prevent Google from indexing content like WordPress files, themes and other machine-generated stuff that’s part of the blogging platform.
#5. My Google Webmaster Tools dashboard had certain HTML Suggestions for pages with short meta descriptions or duplicate title tags. I have fixed them as well.
What I didn’t do? Some sites suggested that having too many ads above the fold may be a factor in Panda but after discussing this with the right people, I decided against altering the layout of ad units for now.
Also, I am not too worried of site scrapers since all posts in my RSS Feed links back to the original post and thus Google should have little trouble determining the original source.
google panda traffic

Traffic Improvement after Google Panda Update

I am not sure if any of the above changes have helped, or if Google has pushed new updates to the Panda algorithm, but I do see an improvement in traffic coming from Google (US).
The organic traffic plummeted after February 24th but it again picked up after March 10th. See this detailed Google Analytics chart for the exact traffic pattern. This has been consistent for almost a week now.
As you may have noticed, there isn’t much that I have done those small changes mentioned above might have helped. If you think your website has high-quality and original content but is still affected by the Farmer /Panda update, the best option is that you go back to the drawing board, look at your site structure carefully and do some clean-up. As Google's Wysz remarked:
If you believe you've been impacted by this change you should evaluate all the content on your site and do your best to improve the overall quality of the pages on your domain. Removing low quality pages or moving them to a different domain could help your rankings for the higher quality content.
I also recommend these well-researched posts from Vanessa Fox, Rand Fishkin, Danny Sullivan and Barry Schwartz for advice on what you do to regain your lost Google Search rankings because of the Panda change.

Rate Limits in Twitter

Twitter imposes certain restrictions to prevent abuse of the system from bots and other web apps. For instance, you can’t write more than 250 DMs or 1,000 tweets in a day (including retweets), you can’t follow more than new 1,000 accounts in a day and so on.
Similar restrictions are in place for apps that connect to Twitter via APIs. For instance, Twitter clients can make a maximum of 350 API requests per hour and not more.
twitter rate limit
However, what I was not aware of was the fact that Twitter has a rate-limit for “human” users as well who access the Twitter web site through a normal web browser. What you see above is a screenshot of an unexpected error message I got while doing a routine search on Twitter.
The error basically says that if too may search requests originate from the same IP address, even through a web browser, Twitter will block the request.
It disappeared once I refreshed the page but there was this important bit in the message which most Twitter users aren’t aware of – “For locations where many people share the same IP address (e.g., corporations and conferences), our rate limits may be too strict.” My guess is that this restriction is only in place for anonymous users who are using Twitter search which logging in.

Notes from India Today Conclave 2011

Compare Nokia® devices on the official site & find a local store!
Wael Ghonim from Egypt
Wael Ghonim is a marketing executive at Google but to the outside world, he is now best known as the face of the famous Egypt revolution that ultimately led to the removal of Hosni Mubarak from power. Internet had played a major role in the Egyptian Revolution so it was no surprise that when Wael met Sir Tim Berners Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, his first words were – “Thank you for the Internet.”
This is just one of the many memorable scenes from India Today Conclave 2011 that recently concluded at the Hotel Taj Palace in New Delhi. The speakers included top politicians, entertainers, technologists and also Vijender Singh, the lone sportsman who got a standing ovation after his short but frank speech on our obsession with Cricket.
There was Shah Rukh Khan who lamented the fact that despite the burgeoning Indian software industry, we don’t have enough people skilled in visual effects required for film-making. He commented that the kind of ‘special effects’ related work that comes to India is the one that requires the least amount of skill - Let’s stop being proud of the fact that we removed wires in Harry Potter that made him fly.
Shah Rukh shared a quote from Alfred Hitchcock that sent everyone into a sea of laughter – the length of a film should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder. And there was one thing common between Shah Rukh and Sonakshi Sinha – both read their speeches from an iPad 2.
The “digital debate” session with Sir Tim Berners Lee, Josh Klein and Wael Ghonim was particularly interesting for me. Wael compared how the Egyptian revolution was like Wikipedia where everyone contributed their own bit selflessly and that there was no real hero. In Wikipedia, everyone contributes and you rarely know who the actual contributors are.
Wael shared that the Egyptian movement was part inspired by the silent protests of Mahatma Gandhi in British India and how they used modern communication tools like Facebook to involve hundreds of thousands of Egyptians, including people who have never used the web. It was an inspiring story and though Wael was speaking from Cairo over a video link, the atmosphere on this side was electric.
In response to Sir Tim Berners Lee’s poll on who should have the power to control the Internet, the answer was a unanimous “nobody” which Tim suggested was both good and bad. He said he was more worried about large corporations controlling the Internet than the Government itself.
Unlike most other conferences where the audience are often engrossed with their mobile phones or laptops – either they are live-tweeting the event or just checking their emails – the India Today event was a different experience. The people were genuinely interested in what the speakers had to say and this was quite evident from the Q&As that happened after every panel. The cellphones often stayed in the pockets even during the session breaks as networking took precedence.
You can watch the video recording of all sessions at the India Today Conclave website and some of the videos are up on YouTube as well. Overall, the event was a good learning experience and one left with a feeling of time well spent. Thanks India Today for inviting me!

The New Layout of Google Sitelinks

When you search for a brand or domain name on Google (see example), the search results may often contain a cluster of 6-8 links that point to some of the most important interior pages of that site. Google calls them Sitelinks and they are meant to serve as shortcuts to help Google users quickly find the information they're looking for on that particular website.
google sitelinks - screenshot

Google Sitelinks

Sitelinks in Google search results have so far contained only the title of the page but it looks like Google is testing a new layout where the page meta description is also shown alongside relevant Sitelinks. See the screenshot above.
For me, the more significant change here is the amount of screen estate that Google is providing in search results to sites that perfectly match the search criteria. Thanks Tamish for sending in the image.

The Various Options for Buying a Kindle in India

Exciting Rewards Every Time You Use Your Amex Card. Apply Here
kindle indiaThe other day I got a call from someone who wanted advice on how he could buy an Amazon Kindle for their office in India.
The question was a bit surprising considering how easy the process of ordering a Kindle from India is (see video). You visit the Kindle page on Amazon.com, change the country to India, enter your credit card details and the device should reach your doorstep in 2-3 days. In fact, Kindle is the only gadget on the Amazon.com website that you can get directly shipped to any postal address in India.
Well the problem was something else. That person worked for a Government office, they wanted to buy a Kindle for ‘official’ use but at the same time, they weren’t authorized to make purchases through credit cards. Thus it was impossible for him to buy the Kindle from Amazon.com as the site only accepts international credit cards.

Websites that ship Amazon Kindle to India

If you are in a similar situation as him or if you would like to learn about the other non-Amazon websites that also sell the Kindle, here’s a comparison chart for you (prices are in Indian Rupees and they include shipping, import duty and all other taxes):
Vendor Kindle Wi-Fi 6" Kindle
Wi-Fi + 3G
Payment Options Status
India Plaza 8950 11850 Credit and Debit Cards, Net Banking, Cheque, DD, Money Order Available
Indiatimes 9614 12595 Credit and Debit Cards, Net Banking, Cheque, DD, Money Order Out of stock
Shop Your World 9367 12232 Credit and Debit Cards Available
Amazon.com 9234 12120 Credit and Debit Cards Available
20 North 9508 12807 Credit Cards and PayPal Out of stock
eBay India 9099 12121 Credit cards, Debit cards, Online Bank Transfer Available

Indian shopping sites like India Plaza and Indiatimes offer you an option to buy the Kindle in India using debit cards, through online banking or you can use the good old money order, cheque or demand-draft – payment modes that are still popular in areas when Internet banking has not picked up yet.
At the time of writing this, the Indiatimes store had run out of their Kindle stock while India Plaza offered the best deal though the shipping cycle was a bit longer at 10 days. 20 North is another option as it accepts payment through PayPal (will that work?) but they too are out of stock at the moment.
Finally you have the global eBay website where you may again find some good deals on the various Kindle 3 models and payment can be made via credit cards or through online bank transfer. The Kindles listed on eBay are often sold by sellers who are based in the U.S. and shipping they say usually happens 10 business days of receiving cleared payment. The wait could therefore be much longer.
If you compare the price of Kindle across the various online stores, India Plaza might look a bit cheaper than Amazon.com but please note that Amazon charges a certain deposit against possible import duties and they often refund a portion of it after the item has been shipped and delivered.
Also, Amazon.com takes only 2-3 days to deliver so it is still the best bet provided you have an Amazon.com gift voucher or an international credit card to make the payment.

Firefox 4 Final is Here!

firefox 4
The RC has been around for sometime now and Mozilla is expected to launch the final version of Firefox 4 sometime tomorrow. However, if you are getting a bit impatient and can’t wait any longer to download your favorite web browser, here’s something for you.
The installers for Firefox 4 final are now available for download on Mozilla’s FTP servers that you may directly access using the following links:
If some of your favorite extensions are not compatible with the new Firefox 4, here’s a short guide on how to make them work with Firefox 4.
Also, the above download links point to the English (US) version of Firefox 4 but if you would like to download the installer for another language, simply change the en-US to your language code (like hi-IN for Hindi and so on).

Orkut Borrows the ‘Like’ feature of Facebook

orkut_like
The Orkut blog just announced that they have added a new “like” button in Orkut that will help you quickly react to your friends’ stories through smileys.
Unlike Facebook where pressing the Like button mostly means that you have really liked the story, Orkut’s implementation of the Like feature is much more complex (and ugly) offering users a whole range of emotions.
The following tweet from Suhel completely sums up my reaction to this new Orkut feature.

What’s the IP Address of my Router?

Whether you are looking to upgrade the firmware of your existing router or need to further secure your Wireless network with an even stronger password, you first need to know the exact IP address of the router in order to access the various settings.
Now the default IP address of most routers is either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 but in some cases - see example - you might have changed the default IP address at the time of installation and unfortunately, you do not remember that value any more.
Not a problem. There are at least two easy ways by which you can quickly determine the IP address of your router.
Option #1 – Go to Start –> Run and enter the following command in the Run box.
cmd /k ipconfig
The IP address listed under “Default Gateway” is your router’s IP address (screenshot).
Option #2 – Open the Run box again and type the traceroute command as shown below:
cmd /k tracert www.labnol.org
The IP Address listed at the first hop in the traceroute log is your router’s IP address.
If nothing works, you might have to reset the router to factory defaults and this will change its IP address back to 192.168.1.1 (Google the name of your router model for the exact value).

Write the Indian Rupee Symbol using Common Windows Fonts

Indian Rupee symbol as Windows font
The India Rupee symbol is now part of the official Unicode standard but for you to type that new currency sign into your favorite word processor or spreadsheet using a regular keyboard, your existing fonts must be updated to the new standard as well.
There are some font families – like DejaVu fonts - that have been updated to the new Unicode standard and thus include support for the new currency symbol but the problem is that these fonts have limited adoption.
Well the good news is that Microsoft has recently updated all the common fonts the ship with Windows to include support for the new Indian Rupee symbol. That means you can open a document inside Microsoft Word (or notepad), select a popular font family like Arial or Times New Roman, and type the Rupee sign directly.
To get started, you first need to update your existing Windows fonts by installing the kb2496898 hotfix available for both Windows Vista and Windows 7. Once installed, this will update the Arial.ttf, Times.ttf, Tahoma.ttf and some of the other font files on your computer with the latest version.
How to Type the Indian Rupee Symbol using Arial
Launch Microsoft Word, change the document font to Arial or Tahoma, and type 20B9 followed by Alt-x. If the 20b9 string is converted into a Rupee symbol, as in the screenshot above, the update has been successfully applied.
Here’s a screeencast that explains how you may add the Rupee symbol to your documents.

The Microsoft fonts update is available as a free download to anyone who is running a genuine copy of Windows 7 or Vista. However, if you add the Rupee symbol to your document and share it with another colleague who doesn’t have the latest Windows fonts, they are likely to see some junk characters in place of the Rupee sign.
A simple solution to this problem is that you create a PDF file of your Word document with font embedding enabled and that should preserve the character even if the font is missing. For example, compare this PDF and Word document – they're similar but you’ll see the Rupee symbol in the PDF even if you don’t have the latest Arial font on your Windows machine.

Bookmarklet Adds a 3D Effect to Webpages

3d webpage
Got a pair of 3D glasses? Then try this cool bookmarklet from Mark Beasley that will convert all the 2D images on a web page into anaglyphs which appear three-dimensional when viewed through a pair of red-cyan glasses.
To get started, first drag this link - Turn 3D - to your browser’s bookmarks toolbar. Then open any web page that has some pictures (for example, Google Images), click on the bookmarklet and it should convert all the images on that page into red/cyan 3D anaglyphs.
On a related note, you can easily create your own 3D Anaglyph images from any 2D image using Adobe Photoshop (or Gimp) as described in the following video tutorial:

to Know about Google Apps for New Users

When friends ask me which service should they use to buy new web domains on the Internet, I almost always recommend the free edition of Google Apps and here’s why:
google apps#1. Domain registrations done through Google Apps will cost them $10 per year and this includes free email, calendar, online office suite and other Google goodies.
#2. Google provides ‘private’ domain registrations by default and this means, people won’t be able to read your contact information through the WHOIS record of your domain.
#3. You can set Google Apps to auto-renew your domain registration a week before the expiry date and the renewal charges are a flat $10 per year.
I have registered quite a few domains in these years – like labnol.org, sleepingtime.org, indianbloggers.org, talltweets.com, etc. – and they’ve all been purchased through Google Apps for the reasons stated above.

Registering Domains with Google Apps - Things You Should Know

If you have never used Google Apps before but are planning to use the service to register your next web domain, here are three things that you should know:
1. Google Apps is (still) Free
If you visit the homepage of Google Apps, all you see is the business edition that costs $50 per user per year. Is Google App no longer free?
Well, for some reason Google has decided to hide the free edition of Google Apps from their homepage but you can still access it using the following link:
https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/domain/new
Select the tab that says “I want to buy a new domain name” and enter a domain name that has not been taken. You can buy .com, .net, .org, .info and .biz domains1.
2. Choose your Domain Registrar
Google itself is not a domain registrar but they have partnered with eNom and GoDaddy  to make the process as seamless as possible. Thus, when you buy a domain through Google Apps, you are actually buying it from GoDaddy or eNom.
It really doesn’t matter who you are buying the domain from since both are ICANN accredited domain registrars but in case you have a preference, say it here:
https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/domain/providers
Select any one of the domain registrars, then type a domain name and hit buy!
3. Try Google Apps without buying a Domain
This is one useful feature that not many people seem to be aware of. If you would like to test the various features of Google Apps, you can actually do that without even having to buy a domain.
https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/sample/new
Just visit the above page, type in your email address and Google Apps will create a dummy Google Apps account for that email address to help you try out the various features without spending a penny.
[1] You can also use international domains with Google Apps but in that case, you’ll have to buy them separately from another domain registrar.

how to Add Your Blog Sitemap to Google Webmaster

This video tutorial describes how you can add your blogspot.com blog to Google Webmaster Tools using an XML sitemap.

Add Your Blogspot Blog Sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools

Step 1. Open the Google Webmaster Tools website at google.com/webmasters and click "Add a Site" button to submit your Blogger blogger.

You can either type the web address (URL) of your blogspot.com blog or even a self-hosted blog where you are using the Blogger platform with your personal domain.

Step 2. Google will ask you to verify that you are the owner of this blog. Just copy-paste the meta code to the clipboard and then paste* this information into the template of your Blogspot blog.

*You should switch to the "HTML" version of your blog template and paste the code just below the tag.

Step 3. Go back to Google Webmaster Tools and select "Sitemaps" from the right sidebar. Now click the "Submit a Sitemap" button.

blogger sitemap

Step 4. Type atom.xml?redirect=false and submit. Once the clock status icon changes to a green tick, your Blogger sitemap has been successfully submitted to Google for indexing.

* If you are using FeedBurner for your Blogger RSS Feeds, the redirect=false parameter will force Google to download your Blogger feed and not the FeedBurner feed.
